Summary of Position Description:

The Senior Associate Dean for Research will report to the Dean of SOM.

SOM Research:

The UNM School of Medicine has been exploring ways to improve human health through biomedical research and population health research since its founding more than 50 years ago. Faculty members conduct a broad range of research, from cell- and animal-based laboratory studies to population health and community-engaged clinical investigations.  Total SOM research awards for FY23 are over $184M, with almost $130M in Federal awards.  In addition to a diverse portfolio of individual awards, the school’s over 1,200 faculty members are involved in programmatic research efforts including the Clinical and Translational Science Center, Comprehensive Cancer Center, three NIH-funded Centers of Biomedical Research Excellence, and multiple cross-campus research initiatives.  The research environment includes state-of-the-art core facilities for the spectrum of studies from cell and molecular through clinical and community-based research.  The SOM also prioritizes research education, including supporting a range of pipeline, graduate and faculty development programs.  The SOM seeks to continue to grow individual and programmatic research programs, and increase shared resources and other support for investigators at all career stages.

The Senior Associate Dean for Research will:

  • Enthusiastically embrace the School of Medicine’s mission, vision, and values.
  • Develop and implement visionary strategies to help sustain and continue to grow a world-class, collaborative, grant-funded, and vibrant research culture within the SOM, with a particular focus on biomedical and health-related fields, translational science, and community-based clinical research.
  • Promote engagement in interdisciplinary research across the SOM’s faculty and externally with other individuals, organizations, and relevant stakeholders.
  • Build relationships with community members, including healthcare partners, to involve them in the research process.

  • Support the development of appropriate institutional infrastructure, and the development of research opportunities for trainees and faculty. This role will lead research and innovation to improve health outcomes for New Mexico communities in line with the institutional vision of UNM 2040, while continuing to build a national reputation for UNM School of Medicine in clinical research.
  • Ensure that all SOM research educational programs are adequately sized and supported to provide an excellent training environment and contribute to a sustainable research community at the institution.
  • Lead an annual SOM research evaluation and review process to ensure that the needs of SOM investigators are being met.
