Catalyst Tenure-Track Faculty Cluster Hire

We’re seeking up to four researchers for tenure-track assistant professor positions to build a new cross-disciplinary team that will advance substance use disorder (SUD) treatment from the bench to the bedside.

This cluster hiring initiative builds on Carolina’s strengths in public health, computational medicine, and neuromodulation. By adding new capacities and analytical methodologies, we are creating a comprehensive, cutting-edge approach to understanding and treating SUD.

UNC-Chapel Hill seeks to hire one individual in each of the following research areas: neuroengineering, biomolecular data science and drug discovery, clinical-translational psychiatry, and health behavior.

Position Summary:

Candidates with relevant backgrounds and expertise in any of the following areas are encouraged to apply:

Neuroengineering: Expertise in biomedical neuroscience and neuroengineering with interests in data collection from the brain, analysis of neurological data, and approaches to modulate the brain function or interface with the brain. Interest in applying tools and analysis to SUD as well as other neurological conditions and pathologies. Background in biomedical engineering, neuroscience, neurosurgery, or a related field.

Biomolecular data science and drug discovery: Expertise to help ingest, curate, and procure multi-scale data to identify and develop new pharmacotherapies for SUD. Background in biological or chemical domains with strong core expertise in machine learning and AI.

Clinician Scientist: Expertise to develop and maintain a clinical research program related to alcohol and/or substance abuse and dependence that bridges basic science and clinical addiction medicine leading to innovative approaches in the care of patients with SUD. Background in psychiatry.

Health behavior: Expertise in implementation science, interventions, and community-engaged scholarship translating discoveries into community-based programs and evidence-based policies at the local, state, or national level, especially related to alcohol and/or substance abuse (e.g., opioids). Background in public health and health behavior.

Preferred Qualifications, Competencies, and Experience

Degree in related area. Candidates will be expected to teach, build an extramurally funded research program, contribute to department and University service, and contribute to clinical service (if relevant) according to their home position’s expectations. Ideal candidates will have demonstrated expertise in these areas upon application.

Minimum Education and Experience Requirements:      

Candidates must have a Ph.D. or M.D. or be able to obtain a Ph.D. or M.D. prior to start of the position in an appropriate field of study.
