As part of a diverse community of faculty and staff who represent many faith systems and worldviews, Marian University is seeking an Assistant/ Associate Professor of Anatomy who will promote Marian University’s Catholic Franciscan mission and identity by providing instruction that will allow learners to acquire a competence with the relationship of normal processes of various systems of the human body and the integration and regulation of these systems in health and disease. This position contributes to the education of undergraduate medical students at Marian University Wood College of Osteopathic Medicine (MU-WCOM).

Essential Duties and Responsibilities:

Actively engage the Catholic Franciscan mission and identity of Marian University (MU) by modeling the Franciscan Sponsorship Values and honoring the legacy of the founding congregation through transformative education, unity in diversity, leadership through service, integrating faith and life, and institutional policies.

MU-WCOM faculty members who provide training in anatomy contribute to the mission and success of the college and the success of its students through excellence in teaching, scholarly activity, and service to the University and community as follows:

The Assistant/Associate Professor of Anatomy achieves excellence in teaching by:
Participating in the development, delivery, evaluation, and improvement of the curriculum.
Supervising and directing learning by students in systems courses where anatomy content is presented.
Providing sufficient understanding of concepts and facts related to anatomy in normal and abnormal states to allow students to demonstrate the competencies embodied in the National Board of Osteopathic Medical Examiners (NBOME) COMLEX-USA Level 1 examination, and to proceed into the clinical rotations of the 3rd and 4th years of medical school.
Assuming an appropriate share of the discipline-related teaching and service responsibilities inherent to the MU-WCOM curriculum.
Providing leadership in matters of curriculum and curriculum evaluation.

The Assistant /Associate Professor of Anatomy demonstrates excellence in scholarly activity through the establishment of a research program that involves students and that leads to the creation and dissemination of new knowledge.

The Assistant /Associate Professor of Anatomy provides excellence in service to the University and community through involvement and leadership on committees and professional societies, and by providing mentorship to students.

For purposes of this position description and its evaluation:
Teaching means:

Preparation and delivery of activities in the MU-WCOM systems-based curriculum related to discipline-specific biomedical science topics, at a level of detail, quality and rigor commensurate with medical school instruction.
Facilitate small group discussions on topics appropriate to the faculty member’s expertise and discipline.
Collaborate with other faculty members in the biomedical and clinical sciences to develop educational experiences that will foster student learning in medically relevant disciplines.
To prepare and administer exams and other evaluative tools to determine the progress of students and their qualifications to advance in their education to the next level.
Personally engage in professional development activities that will continuously improve the competence and effectiveness of the individual as a competent and effective medical school educator.
Model professionalism through scrupulous ethical behavior.
To continuously seek innovative and effective means of strengthening and extending his/her skills in engaging students in the process of acquiring competencies required of MU-WCOM medical graduates.
Other activities may be credited to a faculty member’s teaching responsibility.

Scholarly activity is broadly described in terms enunciated by Boyer (1990) and means:
Activities undertaken by a faculty member to discover new knowledge in his/her field or in a related field.
The development of novel methods, processes, technology, uses or materials that advance the faculty member’s discipline or field of expertise.
Integrate existing knowledge in an intellectually rigorous way that advances understanding within a discipline of field.
Being pursued by an individual faculty member, or by an individual as part of a collaborative group each of whom contributes significantly to the successful accomplishment of discovery, development or integration.
As appropriate and necessary for professional advancement, seek funding through grants and contracts to support research and other academic endeavors.
Other like activities may be credited to a faculty member’s scholarship responsibility.

Service to the institution or community means:
Active involvement with college or university committees.
Providing exemplary leadership and guidance to student organizations.
Mentorship of individual students and advisees.
Participation in the interviewing and selection of students for future MU-COM classes.
Using discipline-based knowledge and skills to benefit community organizations and groups that benefit the greater good of society.
Serving professional organizations that enrich academic and research scholarship, which may include serving on committees, reviewing grants and manuscripts, writing NBOME questions.
Other like activities may be credited to a faculty member’s service responsibility.

Communicates regularly with supervisor about Department issues
Meets department productivity standards
Participates in developing department goals, objective, and systems
Assists to establish department measurements that align and support the accomplishment of the University’s strategic goals
Adheres to the department budget

Required Qualifications:

To perform this job successfully, an individual must be able to perform each essential duty satisfactorily. The requirements listed below are representative of the knowledge, skill, and/or ability required. Reasonable accommodations may be made to enable individuals with disabilities to perform the essential functions.

Applicants must hold a PhD in Anatomy or an equivalent terminal degree in a discipline with an anatomical focus.
Teaching experience should include teaching in a dissection-based anatomy course (preferably in large team-taught medical-level courses).

All candidates with relevant academic and teaching experience are welcome to apply. Those with additional teaching experience in a DO or MD program after their terminal degree are preferred.
An ability to teach neuroanatomy/ neuroscience and/or histology is strongly preferred.
Candidates must have a proven record of scholarly activity (e.g., research publications, grants) consistent with the rank of Assistant or Associate Professor.
