The Department of Pediatrics, University at Buffalo (UB), Jacobs School of Medicine and Biomedical Sciences, and the Oishei Children’s Hospital is seeking a highly motivated Pediatric Infectious Disease Physician who is an excellent clinician and wants to build a strong scholarship presence. We are particularly interested in developing scholarship in antibiotic stewardship. The successful candidate will play a pivotal role in developing and implementing evidence-based strategies to optimize antimicrobial use in our pediatric population with a goal of becoming a national leader in the field. Consideration will also be given for physician-scientists that would benefit from collaboration with national and international leaders present on our campus. Depending on the qualifications of the applicant, the position may be classified as tenured or non-tenured track.

This position offers a unique opportunity to join our dynamic team of healthcare professionals dedicated to providing exceptional care to pediatric patients, advancing research, and promoting education in the field of infectious diseases. We have an active fellowship program and opportunities for leadership in that program are available. Ongoing scholarship projects in our division are wide and varied and include: coordination with international and regional clinical research efforts in Kawasaki disease and CMV, improved clinical care of Hepatitis C exposed children, pediatric Lyme vaccination, development of HIV vaccines, B cell immunology, clinical care and studies on pediatric COVID-19 and MIS-C, and studies on Kawasaki disease immune responses.

Clinical Practice:
Care is primarily at Oishei Children’s Hospital of Kaleida Health, a 389-bed free-standing Women’s and Children’s Hospital. This site is the sole tertiary care hospital for all children in Western New York (WNY) and upper Northwest Pennsylvania admitting nearly 28,000 patients annually and treating 123,000 patients in the emergency department or one of its 45 specialty clinics. The hospital, along with UB’s Clinical Research Office, facilitates clinical and translational research studies. We see children for outpatient consultations and follow-up visits in our clinic adjacent and connected by environmentally controlled walkways to the hospital. We also perform consultation with other centers in Buffalo on a limited basis.

The candidate will share call in a growing division and will have dedicated protected time for stewardship or other scholarship project as appropriate. Stewardship is supported by an involved pharmacist in the Kaleida Health system. Expansion of our outpatient presence is available for motivated individuals.

Clinical expectation:
  • Provide comprehensive care to pediatric patients with infectious diseases, including diagnosis, treatment, and management of complex cases.
  • Collaborate with interdisciplinary teams to develop individualized treatment plans, ensuring the appropriate and judicious use of antibiotics.
  • Conduct thorough evaluations of patients' medical history, physical examinations, and laboratory findings to guide treatment decisions.
  • Promote effective infection prevention practices and antimicrobial stewardship principles throughout the healthcare system.

Specific to Antibiotic Stewardship director role:
  • Develop and implement antibiotic stewardship programs targeting pediatric patients.
  • Monitor antimicrobial use and resistance patterns to identify areas for improvement and intervention.
  • Collaborate with infection prevention teams to develop guidelines, protocols, and educational materials focused on optimizing antibiotic use.
  • Participate in antimicrobial utilization review committees and provide expert recommendations on antimicrobial selection, dosing, and duration.

Research:
  • Engage in research activities related to pediatric infectious diseases (on antibiotic stewardship programs or other research projects).
  • Publish findings in peer-reviewed journals and present at national and international conferences.

Education:
  • Contribute to the education and training of medical students, residents, and fellows through didactic teaching, clinical supervision, and mentorship.
  • Stay updated with the latest advancements in the field by attending relevant conferences, workshops, and continuing education opportunities.

Salary range is commensurate with level and competitive with similarly situated institutions.

UBMD Pediatrics is one of 18 practice plans within UBMD Physicians’ Group, the single largest medical group in the area, and we are supported by 14 pediatric subspecialties. Our physicians also make up the academic teaching faculty within the Department of Pediatrics at the Jacobs School of Medicine and Biomedical Sciences at the University at Buffalo.
