Dr. Saubermann is interested in the intestinal mucosal immune system, and how it is involved in Inflammatory Bowel Diseases, such as Crohn's Disease, Ulcerative Colitis, Microscopic/lymphocytic colitis, and Celiac Sprue. He has a number of projects related to inflammatory bowel disease, including clinical research trials with new biologic agents, testing for novel serologic markers of disease activity, and examining the effects of environmental toxins on the mucosal immune system. He is collaborating with other clinical and basic science researchers throughout the university to better understand the mechanisms behind the disease and develop new therapies. In addition, he participates as a co-investigator on a longitudinal countywide database study of inflammatory bowel disease subjects.
