Position description


The Helen Wills Neuroscience Institute at the University of California, Berkeley seeks applications for two Assistant / Associate Project Scientists in the Foster Lab, in the area of Rodent Behavioral Neurophysiology. Work in our laboratory focuses on elucidating the neural mechanisms underlying learning and memory, with a particular focus on coordinated neural spiking in the hippocampus and associated brain regions. We apply large-scale multi-tetrode recording techniques in combination with freely moving behavior, together with innovative behavioral task design, and cutting edge technologies for the manipulation of neural activity.

The specific roles for these positions include spearheading the design, execution and analysis of new behavioral neurophysiology experiments related to our laboratory's scientific interests, and to lead the process of disseminating these results in accordance with standard procedures in the field.

General duties include the conduct of experiments including:
-Surgical implant preparation (electrode manufacture, head stage manufacture, head stage preparation)
-Animal behavioral training
-Surgery
-Animal care
-Post-surgical procedures including electrode advancement
-Data collection during behavioral tasks and pre-and post- sleep sessions
-Euthanasia
-Histology
-Data archiving
-Data processing
-Extensive data analysis

Additional duties include:
-The preparation and submission of manuscripts as co-author with the PI (Foster)
-Response to reviewers
-Presentation at conferences
-Good neighbor duties within the lab such as helping to maintain and update animal and other protocols
-Purchasing
-Maintaining clean spaces etc.
-Attendance is mandatory at weekly lab meetings and regular presentation at these meetings

Qualifications
Basic qualifications (required at time of application)
- PhD, or equivalent international degree

Additional qualifications (required at time of start)
- At least 3 years post Ph.D research experience

Preferred qualifications
- PhD, or equivalent international degree, in Neuroscience or related subject
- At least 3 years experience as a postdoctoral associate or postdoctoral fellow conducting behavioral neurophysiology experiments in a similar laboratory environment
- Familiarity with the scientific output from the Foster Lab, as well as that of related laboratories in the field
- Demonstrated knowledge of rodent behavioral tetrode neurophysiology, including animal training, implant design and manufacture, surgery, tetrode adjustment, experimental recording and post-experiment analysis (i.e. spike sorting, LFP analysis).
- Demonstrated experience in quantitative analysis of neural data eg spike train analysis, replay analysis
- Demonstrated ability with relevant programming languages such as Matlab or Python
