The University of Illinois College of Medicine has launched an international search for a visionary leader who will serve as the next Head of the Department of Medical Education. The department is the longest continuously operating academic unit in the world dedicated to health professions education. Founded by Dr. George Miller in 1959, the department has long been a leader in health professions education and health humanities.  We seek a leader who will promote innovation and cutting edge scholarship in health professions education.

The Department includes 10 full-time, mostly tenure-track, faculty, 10 part-time faculty, 19 affiliated faculty, and 2 faculty postdocs. Faculty engage in teaching and research in the context of an internationally recognized Master’s in Health Professions Education program, a Master’s in Patient Safety Leadership, and a collaborative PhD program. Department faculty contribute to the College’s innovative MD curriculum, graduate medical education, and continuing professional education programs. The Department’s clinical simulation and integrative learning center, one of the first in the nation, opened a new 28,000 sq. ft. facility in 2019, and is positioned to expand the department’s intramural and extramural activities in performance-based teaching and assessment. The Department is home to the newly endowed Dr. Ilene B. Harris Professorship, and we anticipate the new Head will be named to this professorship subject to commensurate qualifications and University of Illinois Board of Trustees approval.

The department’s scholarly activity routinely generates more than 100 peer-reviewed publications annually, supported by grants and contracts from the Association of American Medical Colleges, American Medical Association, the National Board of Medical Examiners, Department of Veteran Affairs, Agency for Healthcare Research and Quality, National Endowment for the Humanities, ,  and other funding resources. The medical education community in Chicago offers opportunities for collaboration with locally headquartered organizations including the Accreditation Council for Graduate Medical Education, the American Medical Association, the American College of Surgeons, and numerous other entities. Department faculty have also contributed to the development of over 35 medical schools (including establishment of new medical schools and conducting faculty development activities) through international consultation services.

Qualifications:

The College seeks an innovative leader in the field of medical education. The candidate must possess a doctoral degree in a related discipline and/or an MD or equivalent degree, with experience in developing innovative educational programs and partnerships and with the stature and communication skills necessary to represent the department and college within the university and the national and international higher education communities. Applicants should also have demonstrated excellence in teaching, a record of scholarship consistent with the Department’s mission, the ability to lead the Department’s multi-disciplinary scholarship approach, and a commitment to diversity, equity, and inclusion in health and health professions education. The department head reports to the Executive Dean of the College of Medicine.

For further information, applicants should submit a curriculum vitae, a letter describing interest and qualifications, and contact information for three references to the search committee chair via email:
