CHAIR-DEPARTMENT OF ANESTHESIOLOGY AND CRITICAL CARE MEDICINE

The University of New Mexico (UNM) is seeking outstanding applicants for the position of Chair of the Department of Anesthesiology and Critical Care Medicine at the Health Sciences Center (HSC) in the School of Medicine. The Department provides clinical perioperative anesthesia coverage to the University of New Mexico Hospital (UNMH). As the states only level 1 trauma center, UNMH is a tertiary and quaternary referral center that acts as a safety net hospital for the citizens of New Mexico. The UNM School of Medicine is celebrated for its innovations in medical education and has earned a reputation for making diversity in its student body and physician workforce a priority. UNMH strives for excellence across four key areas: patient care, education, research, and community engagement.
The Department of Anesthesiology and Critical Care Medicine’s physician led care team model combines the most advanced treatment options available with considered and compassionate care, with 45 clinician educators and 40 advanced practice providers. Moreover, the department is home to a robust 30 resident ACGME accredited residency program in anesthesiology, as well as a number of fellowship programs for advanced training. Our research mission has increasing amounts of significant extramural support.

The ideal candidate is expected to have a history of successfully providing strategic leadership and direction for all aspects of clinical service, educational programming, research, and diversity endeavors. The successful candidate will have an understanding of and experience with administrative and fiscal responsibilities, and a demonstrated commitment to faculty development, well-being, consensus building, and interdepartmental and health system collaboration. The Chair must be a staunch advocate for diversity and inclusion initiatives, and strive to create an equitable working environment.

With respect to clinical service, The Department of Anesthesiology and Critical Care Medicine provides anesthetic care for a wide variety of surgical procedures and disciplines, including Trauma, Neurosurgery, Cardiothoracic surgery, Pediatric surgery, Obstetrics, and ambulatory surgical services. Additionally, the department is home to experts in critical care medicine, and houses divisions of both chronic pain and acute pain medicine. The department is also an integral part of the pre-anesthesia consultation clinic, which provides assessment and optimization recommendations for patients scheduled to undergo surgical procedures.

The educational mission for the Department of Anesthesiology and Critical Care Medicine is realized principally through its ACGME accredited residency program. Current fellowship programs exist in chronic pain and regional anesthesia. The Department maintains vigorous involvement in the undergraduate medical education program through many channels including didactic instruction, clinical skills teaching, block leadership, committee participation and simulation. The UNMH simulation center also provides continuing educational training for faculty both within and outside of the University of New Mexico through its certified MOCA programming.

In addition to the clinical divisions, the department has an increasingly robust research mission and platform. Led by our Vice-Chair of Research, faculty and residents are involved in several areas of grant funded, collaborative work including neuropharmacology, clinical anesthesiology, molecular neuroscience, cell biology, and molecular biology. The research is conducted within a 6,000-square-foot Anesthesiology Pain Laboratory which provide generous space for cell culture, biochemistry, behavioral pharmacology, electrophysiology, and immunohistochemistry. Work in the lab is generally focused on the physiologic mechanisms of and non-opioid treatments for chronic pain.

Located in Albuquerque New Mexico, UNMH partners not only with the school of medicine, but is also part of the State’s Flagship institution for higher education. Exposure to a wide variety of educational opportunities, outdoor activities, and diverse experiences makes Albuquerque a special place to call home.
