The Department of Surgery (SUR), F. Edward Hebert School of Medicine at the Uniformed Services University of the Health Sciences (USU) in Bethesda, Maryland seeks a qualified candidate for the position of Associate or full Professor, and Vice Chair for Education (tenure-ineligible track) . The Department of Surgery supports the USUHS mission as the Nations Federal Health Sciences University, which is committed to excellence in Medicine and Public Health during Peace and War. SOM, SUR, provides the Nation with surgeons dedicated to career service in the Department of Defense and the United States Public Health Service and also with scientists who serve the common good. SOM, SUR, serves the uniformed services and the Nation as the preeminent academic center with a worldwide perspective for education, research, service and consultation in surgery, disaster medicine, and mass casualty situation, and the logistics of surgical care.
Duties: The incumbent will serve as an Associate or Full Professor and as Vice Chair for Education and will assist the Chair and Deputy Chair, SUR, in providing leadership and overall guidance for all aspects of surgical education (UME, GME and CME), research and clinical care being conducted by members of the department. The incumbent will provide oversight for all primary educational programs in the Department. He/she will be responsible for teaching, research, patient care, and administrative assignments.
In coordination with other faculty members of the department, assists in planning and development of surgical curriculum in a manner so as to integrate the student’s knowledge of basic sciences with clinical medicine. Participates in the development and organization of specific courses of study, which provide practical experience in learning fundamentals of sound patient history and physical examination, diagnosis and evaluation of patients with medical and surgical disorders. Responsible for teaching new research techniques, use of appropriate instruments and equipment, and statistical and analytical procedures.
As Vice Chair, he/she is expected to provide leadership of the educational programs in the Department of Surgery. Additional responsibilities include but are not limited to supervising groups of medical students, interns, residents. Preparing materials for presentation, providing daily supervision, and reviewing student performance. Serves as advisor to pre-doctoral and post-doctoral assistants in guiding their training programs. Preparing and presenting lectures in area of major expertise to the entire student body.
Performs patient care, including all appropriate technical procedures, and supervises all patient care services performed by staff and students in area of expertise. Writes and edits for publication, texts, articles, monographs and other materials for use in the source of study and for research purposes. Incumbent must bring to this position a minimum of a M.D. degree, be board certified in Surgery by the American Board of Surgery, maintain an active license to practice medicine in a state, and be credentialed for the full range of Surgery practice.
The position requires: experience in medical school teaching, clinical leadership, educational administration, personnel management, research and development, expertise and experience as reflected by a significant number of publications in critically reviewed journals as appropriate to his/her field of expertise, active membership in scholarly societies appropriate to the Department of Surgery (SUR), and experience with academic leadership. The successful candidate must be academically qualified for a faculty appointment at the Associate or full Professor level in accordance with SOM and USU academic policies.
The following experience and/or knowledge are highly desirable: experience with medical applications of electronic data processing.
This appointment shall be as Associate or Full Professor and as Vice Chair for Education, SUR. The appointment as Associate or Full Professor shall be in the tenure ineligible track.
Assignment as Vice Chair for Education, SUR, is an administrator position assignment and is without tenure. The initial appointment as Vice Chair for Education shall be for a term of up to two (2) years and is eligible for renewal. The assignment as Vice Chair for Education is not a continuous appointment, as the incumbent serves at the pleasure of his or her immediate supervisor(s) and may be relieved as the as Vice Chair for Education at any time.
This position requires direct patient care and/or clinical activities; as such, the incumbent will be subject to pre-employment and random drug testing requirements under the USUHS Drug-Free Workplace Program. Relocation expenses, i.e., PCS or relocation incentives as described on 5 U.S.C 5733, may be authorized in accordance with applicable travel regulations, command policy, and available command funding.
