The Department of Biomedical and Translational Sciences within the Carle Illinois College of Medicine (Carle Illinois) at the University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign is seeking outstanding candidates to serve as Teaching Faculty for our medical education mission. This is an opportunity to join an engaged, enthusiastic, multi-disciplinary group of scholars, health care professionals, and specialists in medical education.

Position Summary

The college is seeking teaching faculty who will contribute to the education of medical students across its foundational science curriculum; actively engage in innovative research in medical education and related fields; and participate in service opportunities to promote achievement of department, campus and college goals. Teaching methods will encompass small group facilitation using a problem-based learning format and other active learning methods, as well as didactic and laboratory instruction. Teaching content focuses largely on the foundational sciences, while also integrating topics in the clinical, engineering, and social and behavioral sciences.

Duties and Responsibilities

Primary teaching responsibilities include small-group facilitation of first- and second-year medical students in case-driven, problem-based active learning experiences that integrate the basic sciences, engineering concepts, and clinical experiences as well as discipline-based and integrative teaching within a systems-based foundational science curriculum. The faculty will use active learning methodologies that focus on empowering medical students to take responsibility for their own learning in all aspects of the educational program in conjunction with standards and expectations set by the Carle Illinois Curriculum Oversight Committee.

Teaching faculty will also contribute to other teaching-related activities in the college, which may include instructional and educational leadership roles. Faculty with relevant experience may have the opportunity to guide the future of the college’s integrated curriculum, as well as develop and teach courses in the college’s (future) graduate programs. Curricular components include, but are not limited to, foundational science, clinical science, social and structural determinants of health; biomedical ethics and humanities; lifespan health; health systems science; and engineering, design, and innovation.

Faculty with a full-time appointment will have dedicated time for research and service. Research being pursued by current faculty spans many areas, including basic science, medical education, and engineering and design. Service assignments might include mentorship and involvement in committees and organizations aligned with the college needs.
