Chair – Georgia Tech/Emory Univ, Wallace H. Coulter Department of Biomedical Engineering
The College of Engineering at the Georgia Institute of Technology (Georgia Tech) and the School of Medicine at Emory University are seeking applications from qualified individuals for the position of Chair of The Wallace H. Coulter Department of Biomedical Engineering (BME). The Department is a joint department of both Georgia Tech and Emory University, reporting directly to the Dean of Engineering at Georgia Tech and the Dean of the School of Medicine at Emory University.
The Chair has overall responsibility for the academic and research programs of BME, including all administrative, budgetary and personnel decisions. The Chair also has significant responsibility for external affairs, including fundraising, community outreach and alumni and industry relations. Candidates for the position of Chair must have an earned doctoral degree and international recognition in his/her specific discipline(s), with a record of excellence in technical, academic and professional achievements. The Chair is expected to provide academic and administrative leadership and maintain an active research program. Candidates must have the leadership skills and vision necessary to advance the Coulter Department towards higher levels of excellence. Experience in working in an interdisciplinary engineering/medical environment is critical. Salary and benefits are highly competitive. The Chair holds the $2.5M endowed Wallace H. Coulter Chair of Biomedical Engineering.

The Department has space and facilities on both campuses, and offers a range of degree programs: a Bachelor’s degree in BME; Master’s degree in Biomedical Innovation and Development; interdisciplinary PhD degrees in Bioengineering, Bioinformatics, Computational Science & Engineering, and Robotics; a joint Ph.D. degree in BME that is awarded by Georgia Tech and Emory, and a Ph.D. degree in BME jointly awarded by Georgia Tech, Emory and Peking University in Beijing, China. The graduate and undergraduate programs are currently ranked #2 by the U.S. News & World Report. The Department presently has 40 full-time equivalent primary tenured/tenure-track faculty members, including 9 endowed chairs. The Department has enrolled 1,300 undergraduates, 250 graduate students, with an annual research and operating budget of approximately $56.7 million. Research areas for the Coulter Department include biomaterials and regenerative technologies, biomedical imaging and instrumentation, biomedical informatics and systems modeling, biomedical robotics, cancer technologies, cardiovascular engineering, Engineering Education, immunoengineering, and neuroengineering. Candidates for the position must have an earned doctoral degree in his/her specific discipline(s) with a record of excellence in technical, academic and professional achievements. Candidates must also be eligible for tenure at Georgia Tech and Emory University at the rank of Full Professor.
