The Department of Clinical Sciences at Cummings School of Veterinary Medicine at Tufts University invites applications for an assistant clinical professor of neurology. We seek an enthusiastic team-oriented faculty member who will provide outstanding advanced care in neurology for patients and service to our clients and referring veterinarians, as well as contribute to excellence in teaching in the DVM student and house officer training programs. This is a continuous-term (tenure-equivalent) track position.

The neurology service provides care in the Foster Hospital for Small Animals (FHSA) and the Hospital for Large Animals (HLA) on the Grafton campus.  The FHSA and HLA are fully equipped multi-specialty teaching hospitals, offering referral services and 24/7 emergency care.  The FHSA caseload is primarily dogs, cats, and exotic species, with approximately 35,000 cases per year. The neurology caseload typically consists of referral cases and animals admitted by the emergency service in the FHSA for neurologic emergencies. Clinical service at Cummings School includes shared back up on-call for the neurology residents who consult on emergency cases during nights and weekends. Neurosurgery on-call is shared with Orthopedic Surgery. 

The neurology service is supported by outstanding radiology, critical care (24 hours), oncology, medicine, cardiology, ophthalmology, anesthesia, and orthopedic surgery services.  Available state-of-the-art equipment includes a linear accelerator, a 160 slice Aquilion Exceed LB™, 3.0 Tesla MRI, fluoroscopy, scintigraphy, Codman® ICP express, and electrodiagnostic equipment for muscle and nerve testing including EEG.

Faculty are expected to assist with specialty board review sessions, journal club, and other aspects of resident training, including supervision of resident research projects.  Clinical faculty are expected to engage in sufficient research and scholarly activity to remain current in the discipline. There are many opportunities to develop independent or collaborative research projects with faculty on this campus or with researchers on other Tufts campuses and within the New England medical community.

Clinical track faculty typically devote approximately 30 weeks (~60%) to clinical activity, ~5 - 8 weeks to scholarly activity, ~5 - 8 weeks to teaching, and ~4 to administrative service. Clinical faculty are expected to engage in sufficient research and scholarly activity to remain current in the field. There are many opportunities to develop independent or collaborative research projects with faculty on this campus or with researchers on other Tufts campuses and within the New England medical community. All scholarly activity is valued in the school’s promotions process. The remainder of the time is available as vacation and university time off (five weeks).

 

Qualifications

Must hold a DVM or equivalent degree.  Completion of a residency program in Neurology meeting the requirements of the American College of Veterinary Internal Medicine Neurology specialty, or a similar specialty organization, is mandatory. Board certification in neurology (ACVIM- Neurology or European College of Veterinary Neurology) is required at, or no later than two years following, the date of hire. Competency in neurosurgery is a requirement.  Demonstrated interest and aptitude in teaching at all levels is expected. Experience and interest in research relevant to the strengths of the department or the school are considered assets. Salary will be commensurate with experience.

Cummings School is situated in Grafton, MA on a 600-acre pastoral campus, forty-five minutes west of Boston and next door to Worcester, the second largest city in Massachusetts.  A virtual tour of the campus is available here.
