Temple University’s College of Public Health strives to solve health’s complexities for a better tomorrow. We invite applications for Associate Dean for Clinical Affairs and Interprofessional Practice, a senior leadership position integral to the College’s growth and innovation.

The College. The College of Public Health is unique in the country, comprising Public Health disciplines (e.g., epidemiology and 4 others), Social Work and 6 clinical disciplines: Athletic Training, Nursing, Occupational Therapy, Physical Therapy, Recreational Therapy and Speech Language Hearing. A graduate program in Nutrition is being developed. In addition, the College is home to Health Information Management and Informatics, Kinesiology, and Neuromotor Science. Together, this distinctive College is building on its interprofessional ethos in education, practice and research to advance interprofessional education and collaboration between our approximately 4,200 students, 165 full-time and 115 adjunct faculty, and communities, health systems, schools, and other health and human services entities we serve.
The College’s research is focused on understanding the fundamental factors that affect the health and well-being of individuals and populations. Our research examines health problems through practice, policy and interventional work with a focus on cancer, HIV, obesity, substance abuse, mental illness, organ transplantation and aging. CPH research is funded by the National Institutes of Health, Department of Defense, National Science Foundation, Gates Foundation, and other major private foundation, state and federal agencies. The College recently launched a new Center focused on Community Engaged Research and Practice.

The University. Temple is an urban, research-intensive Carnegie R1 university located in historic and culturally rich Philadelphia, the nation’s 6th largest city. The city was ranked 3rd by the New York Times as a world tourist destination. The National Science Foundation ranks Temple among the top 100 universities in the country for research expenditures. Temple is the 6th largest provider of professional education in the nation and includes Schools of Medicine, Pharmacy, Podiatry, Law, and Dentistry and research centers including CPH’s Center for Obesity Research and Education.

The Position. The Associate Dean for Clinical Affairs and Interprofessional Practice will be an integral part of the College of Public Health’s vision at Temple. We seek a visionary trailblazer who will work closely with the Dean’s Leadership team to advance clinical initiatives among our professional and clinical disciplines. Existing initiatives include pro bono clinics (North Broad Physical Therapy Clinic, Speech Language and Hearing Clinic), student focused supports (Social Service Annex), research programs providing clinical services (Center for Obesity Research and Education), and a nurse managed primary care clinic (Vaux Community Health Center). The College seeks a seasoned professional from any of our clinical disciplines who understands the future of health care as interdisciplinary teams to promote health and wellness for the whole patient, family and community and who understand the fiscal realities of providing clinical care within today’s complex healthcare environment.

The College plans to develop an interprofessional clinic to serve the community, faculty and staff. The College anticipates creating and expanding these and similar endeavors, particularly as they apply to our interprofessional educational and field-based training opportunities for students. The Associate Dean for Clinical Affairs and Interprofessional Practice will lead the development, implementation, design and administration of this future clinic, having a significant impact on public health access in the heart of North Philadelphia. In conjunction with the goal of developing interprofessional practice, the Associate Dean for Clinical Affairs and Interprofessional Practice will lead our efforts to create an interprofessional education curriculum that will space all the college’s degree programs. The Associate Dean will work closely with Program Directors, Department Chairs and the Associate Dean for Academic Affairs to create a model program that will prepare our college’s practitioners for 21st century practice and inform our research. They will also collaborate to develop and enhance the college’s clinical practice infrastructure and services including overseeing the Office of Clinical Practice and Field Education.

Qualifications. Candidates should have at least 5 years clinical/practice administrative experience and hold licensure or be eligible for licensure for their discipline in Pennsylvania. We prefer candidates with both health administration and academic experience as well as experience in interprofessional training and education. Candidates should be eligible to be appointed at the rank of associate professor or professor and possess a doctorate or relevant advanced terminal degree in any clinical health-related field with preference for disciplines represented within the College. Classification of the position as tenure track or non-tenure track depends on the qualifications and preferences of candidates.

Position Responsibilities

  • Provide leadership for academic clinical practice and student training opportunities, within the College, University and with external partners
  • Develop and facilitate interprofessional education curriculum college-wide
  • Coordinate administrative processes (e.g., credentialing, scheduling) for developing faculty practice plans with the Associate Dean for Faculty Affairs
  • Network with healthcare systems, social services, professional organizations and government in tandem with the Director of Community Engaged Research and the Director of the Office of Clinical Practice and Field Education
  • Collaborate with the Associate Director of Assessment and Accreditation to evaluate interprofessional activities to provide an evidence base for future planning
  • Collaborate with the Associate Dean for Academic Affairs and a collegewide committee in developing interprofessional practice and education
  • Lead entrepreneurial efforts for clinical practice and collaborate with College leaders in interprofessional and transdisciplinary academic, practice and research partnerships
  • Coordinate public health workforce development and continuing education initiatives
  • Assure quality and ethical standards and compliance
  • Seek, obtain and manage resources for clinical practice and public service initiatives
  • Represent the College at local, national and international conferences and scientific meetings
