The Department of Emergency Medicine within the Jacobs School of Medicine and Biomedical Sciences in the University at Buffalo is seeking a qualified individual to serve as Director of Advocacy with an expected rank of Assistant/Associate Professor. The successful candidate will enhance the department’s advocacy mission in support of our faculty, staff, learners, and patients while following their own academic career passions. The Director of Advocacy will design, implement, and monitor efforts to enhance diversity, equity, and inclusion, wellness, and social justice initiatives. In order to fill this position with the right candidate, we intend to shape this role around their unique skills, experiences, and interests.

Members of the Emergency Medicine Healthcare Team practice in highly stressful environments and care for a diverse group of patients, many of whom are underserved by the health care system. A focus on advocacy is intended to enhance the quality of life and outcomes for patients and clinicians.

This position will be through UBMD Emergency Medicine, the practice plan of the University at Buffalo Department of Emergency Medicine. UBMD Emergency Medicine is comprised of nearly 200 physicians, advanced practice practitioners, and other team members. The department staffs 10 emergency departments through Western New York and hosts an emergency medicine residency, two fellowships, and other learners from University at Buffalo.

Advocacy initiatives will comprise approximately 50% of the candidate’s work effort. Examples of these initiatives include (but are not limited to) support of:
  • A pipeline of diverse medical school and resident applicants
  • Educational initiatives regarding the unique needs and social determinants of health for at-risk patient groups
  • Department wellness endeavors
  • Struggling residents, staff, advanced practice providers, and physicians
  • Department, Medical School, and Hospital equity and inclusion initiatives
  • Community outreach programs

The successful candidate and the Department will mutually agree on an academic career focus that will comprise approximately 50% of the candidate’s work effort. Potential examples include (but are not limited to):
  • Clinical or educational research
  • Educational programming in support of residents and medical students
  • Clinical Practice

This is an in-person position based at the Department offices in Buffalo (UB Gateway Building, 77 Goodell St, Buffalo). The position will require frequent local travel to the medical school and hospitals covered by our group within Western New York, including occasionally outside of normal business hours, in support of our team and mission.
