A unique opportunity to join the growing research and graduate program in the Department of Pharmaceutical Sciences at South Dakota State University as an Endowed Faculty in Cancer Research (Haarberg Chair). The Department desires a collegial, collaborative and outstanding scientist in cancer research including cancer biology, cancer genomics,cancer pharmacogenomics, cancer microbiome,cancer pharmacology, cancer drug delivery or closely related areas. The successful candidate will have a strong track record of competitive funding and research publications and is expected to contribute significantly to the Department’s growth in research and graduate program. Faculty who are currently at a senior assistant professor or associate professor level are encouraged to apply.
With a strong alumni base, the College has been fortunate to receive multiple endowments from generous donors. The Department is a leader in the state in intellectual property development, commercialization of technologies, and forming new University spin-offs. The Department has collaborations with clinician scientists and biomedical researchers at Sanford Research and Avera Research Institute both in Sioux Falls, SD. The Department also works closely with start-up companies in the region. The Department provides a very collegial and supportive environment for faculty, researchers and students.
The ‘home’ of the Department of Pharmaceutical Sciences is the State-of-the-Art Avera Health and Science Center, providing 97,000 square-feet of teaching laboratory, classroom, and office space, as well as 48,600 square-feet of research laboratory space. The University has a core-genomic facility, Mass spectroscopy facility and a centralized animal facility for carrying out research with small and large animals including gnotobiotic pig facility for carrying out microbiome research. The Department of Pharmaceutical Sciences has 10 faculty members including an endowed faculty scholar. The Department’s research efforts are focused in the areas of cancer, neuropharmacology, cardiovascular pharmacology, cell signaling, genomics, drug/vaccine delivery, and nanotechnology. Over the last several years the College has made significant investments in new research laboratories and equipment. As the only pharmacy college in the state, the College is the beneficiary of numerous state grants creating significant opportunity for research and development.
This endowed chair position is a 9-month tenure-track faculty appointment with a competitive start-up package. The University offers an excellent health insurance plan and retirement system. • Earned Ph.D. degree in Pharmaceutical Sciences/Biomedical Sciences/Pharmacology/Molecular Biology or in a closely related area.
• Demonstrated experience as an independent investigator in cancer research
• Active research program in cancer.
• Effective written and verbal communication skills
• Effective interpersonal skills
Preference will be given to candidates with the following qualifications:
• Significant research experience in cancer including cancer pharmacogenomics, cancer microbiome, cancer pharmacology, cancer drug delivery or closely related areas.
• Strong track record of grant funding, and potential for competitive research funding from US funding agencies and research foundations
• Strong track record of research productivity in the form of peer-reviewed publications.
• Experience of working in multidisciplinary and collaborative research team
• Experience in mentoring post-doctoral research associates, graduate students and undergraduate students
• Active involvement in scientific and professional organizations.
• Teaching experience in molecular pharmacology/pharmacogenomics/pharmaceutical sciences/biomedical sciences, cancer biology/genomics, drug delivery or related areas
The successful candidate is expected to be an independent investigator and maintain an active research program in cancer research supported through competitive external research funding. The candidate is expected to maintain a strong publication track record.
The candidate is expected to contribute to teaching in his/her area of training and expertise in professional (Doctor of Pharmacy) and graduate (Ph.D. in Pharmaceutical Sciences) programs.
The candidate is expected to serve as an advisor and supervise the research of graduate students, undergraduate students and post-doctoral research associates.
The candidate is expected to serve on the committees as assigned.
About the College of Pharmacy and Allied Health Professions
The College of Pharmacy and Allied Health Professions offers a six-year course of study leading to Doctor of Pharmacy degree and also Ph.D. degree in Pharmaceutical Sciences. Student enrollment includes approximately 350 pre-pharmacy students and around 300 professional program students. The College pharmacy graduates have an excellent track record of achieving 100% pass rate in the National Pharmacy Board Exam. The College has a strong reputation of quality pharmacy education in the region and around the country. The College’s pharmacy graduates are highly sought after by the employers. Currently 20 Ph.D. students are enrolled in the Ph.D. program and the College has graduated 25 students over the last 10 years. Our PhD graduates are well-placed in academia, pharmaceutical industry and regulatory agencies in the US and around the world. The College of Pharmacy and Allied Health Professions has two departments, the Department of Pharmaceutical Sciences and the Department of Pharmacy Practice. In addition, the College offers Bachelors in Medical Laboratory Science and Masters in Public Health.
