The Information Analyst provides data management, analytic and research support to the Director of the Surgical Outcomes Center, within the Jacobs School of Medicine and Biomedical Sciences, Department of Surgery, and serves as an important member of several project-specific research teams, in the Department, JSMBS, SPHHP,across UB and nationally. This self-directed professional will perform a wide variety of tasks from developing analytic samples to helping develop grant applications, to support health services and outcomes research program and contribute to its academic productivity. In addition to superb analytic skills and statistical expertise, the successful candidate must have an appetite for learning and have interest in health policy and public health.
Examples of the work performed include, but not limited to, obtaining, efficiently storing and combing electronic datasets from various sources (e.g., electronic medical records, health insurance claims data, data from clinical trials and observational studies, national surveys and registries, patient self-reported outcomes, area economic and census data, and publicly available sources); conducting appropriate quantitative analyses as directed by the study Principle Investigator with input from other team members; participating in interpreting study results and communicating findings to appropriate stakeholders and audiences; developing study protocols, manuscripts and grant applications; monitoring data quality to ensure integrity and accuracy; maintaining compliance with data use regulations and Federal and UB research policies.
This position requires excellent problem solving and self-directed learning; ability to work both independently and in multidisciplinary teams; ability to manage several projects at once and being able to re-prioritize activities as research priorities change. A Bachelor’s degree in Statistics or other related field and at least 3 years of experience working in research environment is preferred. Proficiency and working knowledge of statistics, econometrics, quantitative research methods and relevant analytic software (SAS, STATA, R, SPSS, Access, Excel, REDCap or other) is required. Exposure to medical terminology, healthcare billing practices and health IT is desired. The candidate must demonstrate strong organizational, communication and interpersonal skills, and have the ability to act with limited direction.
