The Nocturnist admits all patients assigned to the Hospitalist Service (primarily adult, MedSurg patients) and provides in- house (1st pager call) coverage for patients that are either assigned to the Service (Hospitalist is primary service) or patients that the service consults on. As the MICU, CCU and OBS are closed units, the Admitting Physician is NOT responsible for these admissions.
During an average shift, the Admitting Physician will admit approximately 8 patients with probable 1 floor consult (usually a preoperative evaluation) and 1 transfer.
Common conditions managed are CVAs , Acute Coronary Syndrome, CHF, COPD, Pneumonia and Sepsis.
The Nocturnist is responsible for rapid response, urgent and emergent calls for just the service’s patients. No codes.
The Nocturnist has the support of one APP whose primary responsibility is to take all floor pages, then help with admissions per the direction of the attending.
The successful candidate also will be expected to take advantage of the many opportunities for teaching medical students, resident supervision and training.
