Loyola University -- Chicago (LUC), Stritch School of Medicine, invites applications for the position of Professor and Chair of the Department of Surgery.
This highly visible position is responsible for the leadership of ten Divisions within the Department of Surgery and includes responsibility for administrative, academic and financial oversight to the Department.
The successful candidate should have a history of significant leadership activities, excellence in clinical service and a demonstrated track record in academic endeavors.
This position will offer the unique opportunity to lead and grow a well-established Department and lead initiatives to further the clinical, educational and research missions of the Institution.
The Department of Surgery which averages 5,000 operative cases and over 30,000 ambulatory visits annually, provides a true multi-specialty surgical service. It is comprised of 49 full-time Faculty Members, as well as 6 full-time Research Faculty Members. The Department’s robust Educational Program includes 66 Residents and Fellows. Additionally, The Department of Surgery supports the only Level 1 Trauma Center verified by the American College of Surgeons in Illinois, as well as the Burn Center, verified by the American Burn Association. The Department maintains an active Research Program, including 20 NIH Grants, 36 extramural awards and contracts and a number of clinical trials, many of which are housed in the Burn and Shock Trauma Institute, the cornerstone of the Department’s research endeavors.
In addition to the Burn and Shock Trauma Institute, LUC -- Stritch School of Medicine has Research Institutes in Bioethics and Health Policy, Cardiovascular Disease, Infectious Disease and Immunology, Neuroscience and Oncology.
Edward Hines, Jr. VA Hospital, the largest VA hospital in Illinois and immediately adjacent to Loyola, is an integrated teaching hospital for all surgical and medical specialty training programs. Hines VA also provides rich opportunities for Faculty in clinical and basic research. Loyola University Health System and the Faculty recently joined in an integrated health delivery model, with shared governance and strong physician leadership.
The new Surgical Chair would be expected to be a full participant in this innovative leadership structure, with a critical role in establishing new organizational paradigms that support the health system’s strategic plan.
Based in the western suburbs of Chicago, Loyola University Medical Center is conveniently located in Maywood, 13 miles west of the Chicago Loop. The heart of the Medical Center Campus, Loyola University Hospital is a 570 licensed bed facility which has recently been renovated to expand operating room and vascular lab capacity.
