The Paul L. Foster School of Medicine at El Paso is seeking highly qualified Basic Medical Scientists to serve as full-time Medical Educators for the Department of Medical Education.
This is a unique opportunity for Basic Scientists who wish to pursue full-time careers in Medical Education, while contributing to the University’s mission, through teaching and other scholarly activities.
The Texas Tech University Health Sciences Center -- Paul L. Foster School of Medicine was LCME accredited in 2008 to open a new four-year medical school, with a highly integrated and clinically-oriented curriculum.
Faculty are sought to join the current 26 full-time interdisciplinary Faculty Members in the Department of Medical Education, to further develop curriculum material and teach the second class of medical students, entering in Fall 2010.
Medical Education commitment shall be approximately 80% time and effort in the Department of Medical Education, delivering the curriculum to first and second year medical students.
Basic Scientist Medical Educators will have approximately 20% time and effort in scholarly activity.
The Department of Medical Education is home to all traditional Basic Science Ph.D. disciplines, as well as Clinician M.D. Medical Educators. Our 26 full-time Faculty of the Department of Medical Education work collaboratively and interactively, to teach the Basic Medical Sciences in a clinically-relevant format.
The Paul L. Foster School of Medicine employs learning communities with courses in Scientific Principles of Medicine, Society Community and Individual, Medical Skills and, also, a Master's Colloquium in "Colleges" within the Medical School.
Minimum Qualifications: Ph.D.s, M.D.s or equivalent terminal degrees in the Biomedical Sciences; previous records of demonstrated teaching skills; demonstrated interest in Medical Education Research; terminal academic degrees (or equivalent), as defined by the academic unit and as appropriate for the position held; ability to teach effectively; and, the promise of growth in teaching, research and creative activities and service.
Preferred Qualifications: Additional training or experience in Education Theory and/or Evaluation; previous participation in the planning or implementation of a course in Medical Education; experience with innovative teaching methods, including team teaching, problem based learning and the design of computer-based interactive teaching programs; prior use of computer-based programs, such as Web-CT in managing curriculum; participation in national organizations or committees devoted to medical education; and, previous publications in the medical education literature.
All Basic Science Medical Educator positions are salaried and fully funded.
Salaries, academic ranks and tenure options are commensurate with experience.
