Position Summary
The Lead Electron Microscopist will perform daily operations while ensuring that the Electron Microscopy (EM) lab operates efficiently and the work is of the highest quality. Daily tasks will include but not be limited to: oversight and performance of preparations of samples for EM imaging; schedule use of the equipment by faculty, students, and research staff; Conducts or supervise operation of experiments on EM equipment; oversee quality control procedures in the laboratory; perform equipment maintenance and troubleshooting; inventory and order supplies and materials.

The Lead will take part in teaching students and other trainees EM sample preparation techniques, consult and advise customers regarding projects, guide and evaluate technicians, provide instruction in use of lab equipment, and provide advice and instruction in the recording of determinations. The incumbent should maintain the depth of skills necessary for the laboratory to contribute to teaching and research within the university.

The Lead Electron Microscopist will monitor budget of the EM lab and set rates for services provided through the lab. This will include billing and invoicing.

The Lead will set up the new EM lab at the new Jacobs School of Medicine and Biomedical Sciences building equipped with a new cryo capable Transmission Electron Microscope. The Lead will develop and grow the EM lab’s cryo-EM and Correlative Light Electron Microscopy (CLEM) capabilities. This will include providing a formal training program to new users to familiarize them with electron microscope technology and sample preparation.

Minimum Qualifications

  • Associate degree in electron microscopy field or bachelor’s degree in scientific discipline
  • Electron microscopy laboratory or research study experience carrying out research using EM techniques

Preferred Qualifications

  • Master’s or Doctoral degree in scientific discipline with cryo-electron microscopy research experience.
  • Two years experiences operating a TEM core facility.
  • Experience in EM-tomography and Correlative Light Electron Microscopy a plus
  • Experience with cryo-EM
