Position purpose

The Senior Lecturer (Practice) is an appointment based at the Clinical School Johor Bahru. The position will be responsible for the supervision and teaching of students during the clinical placements portion of the MBBS (Hons) program and will assist students to achieve the clinical course objectives. A strong commitment to teaching, patient care, service, and scholarship is required. The appointee will work closely with the Associate Heads of the Clinical School, academic and professional staff, associated hospitals, and senior staff of the MBBS (Hons) program to contribute to the ongoing development, implementation, and evaluation of the program.

Key result areas and responsibility
The key result areas of Research and Education, and Service and Engagement are the basis for the primary duties and responsibilities of the role. Practice academics will have an established record of achievement in clinical / industry teaching and/or research, and in engagement with the professions, which may include clinical innovation.

  • Publish peer-reviewed clinical research studies and/or guidelines for clinical practice, and contribute to successful applications for competitive research funding.
  • Make a substantial contribution to clinical or professional teaching such as successful coordination of a significant aspect of a teaching unit.
  • Teach assigned units/courses, ensuring compliance with educational standards and guidelines of accrediting bodies.
  • Contribute to clinical / industry program development.
  • Assist in the planning, development, and revision of curriculum, develop and revise courses, and assume teaching roles to prepare students for advanced clinical, functional and leadership roles.
  • Prepare materials for presentation and teaching, and provide student supervision, and review student performance.
  • Ensure that the quality, relevancy and value of courses/units reflect clinical/industry expectations.
  • Contribute to the supervision of students in advanced or speciality training programs.

Service and Engagement

  • Undertake leadership roles in the profession, including developing consultancies in areas of expertise.
  • Actively engage in professional associations within their area of expertise.
  • Share in academic service responsibilities, including contributing to outcomes of the discipline and/or school meetings and/or internal campus committees.
  • Contribute to scholarly debate within the profession.
  • Foster strong engagement with the profession, industry, professional bodies and general community.
  • Contribute to the development of collaborative linkages with Malaysian and regional agencies, institutions and industry.
  • Contribute to the overall strategic planning and academic management of the School.
  • Contribute to the development of other academic staff through mentoring, coaching and effective supervision.

Key selection criteria
1. A medical degree and specialist qualification (or similar) with the Malaysian Medical Council registration.
2. Substantial clinical experience in the relevant discipline with high level of clinical competence.
3. Experience in clinical and medical education.
4. Experience in curriculum development and delivery in the clinical setting, including teaching materials and online resources.
5. Experience in assessment, especially clinical assessment of students.
6. Demonstrated understanding of the needs of medical students, including international students.
7. Ability to provide career advice and counseling to students including managing grievances.
8. Demonstrated effective scholarly achievements including a record of publications.
9. Demonstrated ability to develop and maintain excellent working relationships with senior and junior medical staff and other health professionals in hospitals and the community. Desirable
1. Leadership skills in medical education.
2. Experience of postgraduate medical education.
