Job Description Summary

The Department of Clinical Sciences at Auburn University’s College of Veterinary Medicine is seeking applications from qualified individuals for a clinical-track or tenure-track ophthalmology position at the faculty rank of Assistant, Associate or Full Professor. The ophthalmology service at Auburn University is committed to excellence in clinical service, teaching of professional veterinary students, and resident training. It is complemented by specialists in small animal medicine and surgery, equine medicine and surgery, food animal medicine and surgery, avian and exotic medicine, equine and food animal theriogenology, dairy medicine, sports medicine, emergency critical care, medical, surgical and radiation oncology, anesthesia, dermatology, neurology, small and large animal radiology, and ocular pathology. In addition to the Bailey Small Animal Teaching Hospital and the JT Vaughan Large Animal Teaching Hospital, a satellite hospital, Auburn Veterinary Specialists-Gulf Shores, provides clinical services in small animal medicine, surgery, dermatology, and ophthalmology.

The successful candidate will be expected to participate in teaching, clinical service, outreach, and research. Teaching responsibilities include clinical and didactic instructional activities of the professional veterinary medicine curriculum and postgraduate training programs related to ophthalmology. Clinical service responsibilities include a hospital assignment that is based on the appointment as tenure track or clinical track faculty. This involves providing clinical care of patients, teaching veterinary medical students, intern and resident training, and consultation with private practitioners.

Minimum Qualifications

Applicants for this faculty position must hold a DVM or equivalent degree at the time employment begins. Diplomate status in the American College of Veterinary Ophthalmologists or European College of Veterinary Ophthalmologists or board eligibility with the American Board of Veterinary Ophthalmology or European College of Veterinary Ophthalmologist is required. The candidate selected for this position must be able to meet eligibility requirements to work in the United States at the time the appointment is scheduled to begin and continue working legally for the proposed term of employment. Eligibility for faculty veterinary licensure in the State of Alabama is also required.

Desired Qualifications

Clinical and/or basic science research experience and clinical expertise in both small animal and equine ophthalmology are desirable. Individuals with a primary equine ophthalmology interest are encouraged to apply. Residents completing programs in 2024 are strongly encouraged to apply.
