Recruitment for Endowed Professorship in Center for Childhood Neurotherapeutics Basic Research in Childhood Neurological Disorders

The Department of Pediatrics at the Medical University of South Carolina at Charleston is accepting applications for an Endowed Chair for Basic Research in Neurological Disorders at the rank of Associate Professor or Professor supported by the South Carolina’s SmartState Centers of Economic Excellence (COEE). The ideal candidate is an outstanding basic research scientist with expertise in disease mechanisms and experience in therapeutic approaches to treat childhood nervous system diseases, and would complement and expand existing research programs at MUSC. The applicant should have a terminal degree (Ph.D., M.D. /Ph.D. or M.D.) with appropriate research expertise in the neurosciences. The candidate should have a strong national reputation and an outstanding record of high quality publications and extramural funding.

The Endowed Chair will benefit from a highly competitive programmatic and departmental startup package and laboratory space in the newly built Darby Children’s Research Institute (DCRI), which includes state of art shared Lipidomics and Proteomics core facilities. The interdepartmental children’s research program supports a multidisciplinary collaborative environment with opportunities for both basic and translational research in pediatrics, psychiatry, and neurosurgery. Current research strengths include acute and chronic brain injury, neuroinflammation, and neuroprotective interventions in the developing brain. Opportunities exist to collaborate with clinical and basic research investigators with interests in hydrocephalus, leukodystrophies, cerebral hypoxia, trauma and inflammatory/autoimmune white matter disorders. MUSC also has several unique resources that facilitate cutting edge research in pediatric neuroscience. The Center for Biomedical Imaging is a pivotal bioengineering resource. A research-dedicated 3T MR Siemens PRISMA and 7T Bruker animal MR systems are located on campus, with dedicated staff and expert assistance with protocols. These Institutes and Centers welcome joint projects and cross-fertilization of ideas in pediatric disciplines.

The Medical University of South Carolina is consistently ranked among the top Children’s Hospitals nationally by U.S. News & World Report, having 6 ranked pediatric subspecialties including Neurology and Neurosurgery in 2017. MUSC is located in Charleston, SC, a city well known for its rich history, well-preserved architecture, beautiful beaches, celebrated restaurant community and wonderful people. The Charleston area boasts many accolades including being named the Top U.S. Small City for the fifth consecutive year by Conde Nast Traveler 2016 Readers’ Choice Awards. Charleston is consistently given top honors as a most desirable place to live.

Interested candidates should submit a CV, summary of research interests, and contact information for three references to Inderjit Singh, PhD, DSc., Scientific Director of DCRI and Chief, Division of Developmental Neurogenetics, (singhi@musc.edu), and to Andrew Atz, MD, Chairman, Department of Pediatrics, (atzam@musc.edu). Review of applications will begin on October 1st and continue until the position is filled.
