We are looking for talented postdocs/RAs for the cardiovascular mechanobiology lab at Qatar University Biomedical Research Center. Dr. Huseyin Yalcin is the principal investigator in the lab.

At our lab, we investigate mechanical/biological (genetics) factors that are important in progression of cardiovascular complications. These factors include disturbed hemodynamics (i.e. forces by the flowing blood), altered biomechanics of the diseased tissue, gene mutations etc. The diseases we are currently working on include congenital heart defects like ventricular hypoplasia, and tetralogy of fallot; adult aortic heart valve disease; atherosclerosis; aortic aneurysms; and cerebral aneurysms. These cardiovascular
complications are studied with a variety of complimentary approaches: in-vivo, in-vitro, and clinical.

In-vivo: Clinically relevant heart defects are generated in animal models, including mice, zebrafish and embryonic chicken, via surgical and/or gene editing approaches. Disturbed hemodynamics is qualitatively and quantitatively analyzed via doppler echocardiography, micro-computed tomography, time lapse fluorescent/confocal microscopy and computational modeling. Biological progression of the disease is also studied in these animal models via gene/protein screening techniques (RT-PCR, western blotting, microarray etc.).

Clinical: We perform genome screening for heart disease patients to identify novel heart disease mutations. Clinical progression of the studied complications are investigated by developing patient-specific computational models for disturbed hemodynamics and deteriorated tissue biomechanics. Such models are based on medical images from heart disease patients.

In-vitro: We expose cardiac cells to disturbed blood flow conditions using perfusion flow systems and investigate subsequent gene/protein expressions. We also have pulse bioreactors systems in our lab to produce physiological flows and pressures for cardiac tissue engineering applications. Experimental flow analysis techniques such as Doppler and LDA are used for flow analysis in these systems.

Ideal candidates should have experience and/or interest for the following topics (not all required);

Cell/tissue culture, animal experimentation, zebrafish, embryonic chicken and mice,
Gene/protein screening, RT-PCR, whole genome screening, western blot, microarray,
Time lapse fluorescent/confocal microscopy,
Computational modeling for cardiovascular simulations, Fluid-structure interaction, knowledge of relevant software ANSYS, Openfoam,
Medical image analysis (echocardiogaraphy, MRI, CT), knowledge for relevant software such as MIMICS,
Experimental flow analysis (PIV, LDA, ultrasound etc.),
Uniaxial, biaxial mechanics testing,
Tissue bioreactor systems,

The funding for the positions will be through a prestigious National Priority Research Program (NPRP) grant from Qatar National Research Fund (QNRF). The project has a 600,000 USD budget with a duration of three years. Dr. Yalcin is the principal investigator. Collaborating institutions are Qatar University, Cornell University (USA), Sidra Medical & Research Center (Qatar) and Hamad Medical Center (Qatar).
