Brain and Mind Centre | Sydney Medical School
Reference no. 1752/0617

About the opportunity

The Michael Crouch Chair in Child and Youth Mental Health, in the Sydney Medical School (SMS) and operating through the Brain and Mind Centre (BMC) and The Children’s Hospital at Westmead Clinical School, is designed to provide internationally-recognised academic and clinical leadership, in the area of child and adolescent mental health.

As Chair, and a major research leader within Brain and Mind Centre, your research objectives will be to:
•     increase high quality and internationally recognised clinical or population-based research initiatives focused on the field of child and youth mental health
•     support the generation of clinical or population-based research findings that address priorities in child and youth mental health. This could be focused on the development of specialised assessments, innovative services and/or novel treatment programs for children and youth with developmental or emerging mental health disorders
•     generate research that is transformative in nature and achieves high impact in clinical practice in the specialist NSW health sector and beyond.

You will be situated at The Children’s Hospital at Westmead and be eligible for appointment there as a clinical academic with a remuneration package equivalent to 0.4 FTE Senior Staff Specialist. You will also provide clinical and other services to the Sydney Children’s Hospitals Network (SCHN) , including the clinical care of inpatients and/or outpatients. This service contribution will be covered by a separate contract with SCHN.

Your position will be substantively research-based though will contribute significantly to educational programs associated with BMC and the Sydney Medical School MD program. You will also be a member of the University of Sydney’s Discipline of Psychiatry.

You will possess relevant achievements in research and clinical experience in mental health disorders in children and young people and also special needs populations, and be experienced in the implications for emotional and brain development and the neuroscience/neurobiology of child mental health development that informs research into antecedents of psychiatric illness. Although the services of SCHN cater for those up to 16 years of age, you will have the capacity to work along the trajectory of youth mental health, from infancy and childhood through adolescence and youth through partnerships with other organisations. Opportunities to work collaboratively across the Sydney Children’s Hospitals Network with initiatives arising from similar mental health research will also be available. You will also have the opportunity to work collaboratively with mental health practitioners and researchers in the Western Sydney Local Health District.

Term and remuneration
The appointment will be made on a continuing, full-time basis, subject to the completion of a satisfactory probation period for new appointees, and the successful candidate will be offered an attractive remuneration package.
